You can only extend or increase your critical illness cover at a later date if you have a policy with a renewable option. Even then, not all companies offer policies with a renewable option. If you do not have a renewable option then you will definitely not be able to change your level of cover.

If your policy is renewable then you will be able to make amendments to your policy but often only within specified limits. Some insurance companies allow you to increase the sum insured or possibly add other types of insurance on to your existing policy such as life cover. If you are fortunate then these amendments will not require further medical reports.

If the policy is not renewable then your only choice is to cancel your existing policy and take out a replacement or additional policy. If you decide to apply for a replacement policy then make sure you wait until you have received the “On Risk” Notice for your new policy before finishing your existing policy. Otherwise you risk not being covered if something happens, or if there is a problem with your new policy or you change your mind, then you might not be able to restart it.
